Students love demonstrations of chemical reactions – two mysterious substances are mixed together, and all of a sudden, you get hissing, foaming, color changes, and even sparks. A chemical reaction demo is a great way to get students invested in the lesson.

The Chemical Changes Gizmo is a fantastic supplement to any chemical reactions unit. The Gizmo animates 15 reactant combinations and allows students to practice important lab skills such as measuring mass before and after the reaction, comparing temperatures, measuring pH, and using a splint test to identify gases. Students are introduced to a variety of laboratory glassware and setups as well as important scientific principles such as the conservation of matter. All of the reactions shown in the Gizmo can be demonstrated in a properly equipped chemistry classroom (using a fume hood when necessary), and many are safe for a normal classroom as well.
